Dragon boats are large, long boats which are paddled by multiple rowers. The boats were originally made from teak wood in the Pearl River Delta region of southern China. Today, some boats, which are made for competitions, are made carbon fiber and other lightweight materials. In competitive settings, boats are adorned with dragon heads and tails.
Dragon boat races find their origins as ancient folk ritual of villagers competing amongst themselves and against other villages. These competitions may date back as many as 2000 years. Dragon boat racing as an international sport is much younger, beginning in Hong Kong in 1976.
It has been said that a crew’s ability to paddle in sync is more important than their brute strength – a team with good cooperation and timing will most likely beat a stronger but less coordinated team.
Dragon boat racing fosters team building and communication and is a great opportunity for businesses, non-profit organizations, churches, leadership/professional groups, friends and families to get together and support deserving charities such as R.E.D. Rose Program at Dignity Health – St. Rose Dominican. In 2015 alone, according to the race’s sponsors, this program served more than 601 men and women seeking breast health services and identified five cancer diagnoses.
Please come out on October 8, 2016, and cheer on your Emerald Island Casino team members and help support breast cancer screening programs in Southern Nevada!
