Ok, well, how about Happy Intercalary Year? No? Well, then, Happy Leap Year!!!
As strange as the words “Bissextile” and “Intercalary” may sound, there is nothing naughty about either. Both words refer to the insertion of an extra day into the calendar to keep our modern day Gregorian calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the sun.
Scientists tell us that It takes the Earth approximately 365.242189 days – or 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes,
and 45 seconds for the Earth to circle our Sun…give or take a fraction of a second.
The entire Leap Year phenomena is filled with oddities. While “February 30th” is sometimes heard as a sarcastic response to a question asking when something is going to happen, there has actually been such a date! While adjusting their calendar to the Gregorian calendar, the Swedish government inserted an extra leap day in 1712. As a result, for at least one year, February 30th was a real date in Sweden. Imagine being a leapling born on February 30, 1712!
What is a leapling? A leapling, or a leaper, is a person born on February 29th. While it sounds pretty cool to be a Leap Day baby, it does create the dilemma of when to celebrate your birthday in non-Leap years. For legal reasons many countries designate either February 28th or March 1st as a Leap Day baby’s legal birthdate.
